"The reason I joined HR is because I hated numbers." This is such a common quote, that it is already a cliche. PMAP Cebu has a series of HR Competency Acquisition and Validation Programs that focus on specific areas, one of which is People Analytics. It is a technical training about tools and data and business analytics competencies for Human Resource and People Management. While the attendees got a flavor of using one Business Intelligence Tool, the meat of the topic is a refresher on the use of "Math", specifically, Statistics. Measures of Central Tendency, Dispersion, Correlation, Hypothesis Testing, Descriptive versus Inferential Statistics, Linear Programming and Modeling. These were some of the heavy hitters during the session. The whole session was capped with a "revalida" where the attendees were grouped and asked to present their case study about data analytics in the areas of Talent Acquisition, Learning and Development, Compensation and Benefits, Payroll Administration, Employee and Labor Relations, and Workforce Management. It was inspiring to see these young ones facing off a panel of 3 seasoned HR gurus in their respective areas being grilled about the Why, What, How, of their case studies! The best compliment I got from a participant? "I have a new appreciation of numbers sir, it is SEXY and Powerful." As the last line in my presentation slide said, "We can not improve what we can not measure." The future is bright with these young HR professionals stepping up and embracing math to support tactical and strategic business decisions. At the end of the day, the ultimate goal of HR is to be a strategic partner in the organization.
